Chapel Island is just west of the Great Shiplock Park and located south of the canal — accessible from Pear and Dock streets. Chapel Island has a rich history. One of its early uses was as the site of an Episcopal chapel, before the founding of St. John’s Church. It has also been used as a fishery and an ice warehouse.
Perhaps its most notable occupant was William R. Trigg’s shipyard. Trigg built commercial ships as well as navy destroyers and torpedo boats at the turn of the 20th century. You can read more about Chapel Island on its historical marker.
