Virginia Capital Trail
The Virginia Capital Trail is a dedicated, paved pedestrian and bicycle trail that will connect the commonwealth’s past and present capitals of Jamestown and Richmond, along the scenic Route 5 corridor. Once complete in 2014, the trail will traverse more than 50 miles, four jurisdictions and 400 years rich in history along one of the first inland routes in North America.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is constructing the Virginia Capital Trail, 16 miles of which are complete: half a mile in downtown Richmond, 7 ½ miles in Charles City County and eight miles in James City County.
The Sherwood phase, which will connect James City County to the Charles City Courthouse phase, is scheduled for completion in June 2013.
- Bike rentals are available at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park.
- The downtown Richmond portion provides a stunning entrance into the city along Dock Street.
- The Charles City section provides a beautiful and rural backdrop to the trail experience.
